Blue Moon Butterfly


 

The great eggfly, common eggfly, varide eggfly or in New Zealand the Blue Moon Butterfly.this species are found from Madagascar to Asia and Australia.

This species has a high degree of sexual dimorphism. The female is mimetic with multiple morphs. Male the upper-side of the wing is jet black,  offset with three pairs of white spots, two on the fore-wing  and one on the hind-wing.

Eggs identification : The eggs are a pale, glassy green with longitudinal ridges expcet on the top.  

Habitat : Prefers lightly wooded deciduous forests, dens, humid scrublands, green urban areas.

Host Plants : Includes sida rhombifoli , Portulaca oleracea.

(adult diet : nectar from flowers)

Wingspan : 70 - 85mm     2.8 - 3.3in
