Tragedies at the Canopy: Two Black Kites Injured During Tree Cutting at Margao Construction Site

The price of urban development in Margao has taken a distressing turn for local wildlife. A local animal rescuer, has responded to two separate, heart-wrenching incidents at the same construction site, where Black Kites were severely injured during land clearing operations. These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the impact that rapid construction and tree cutting have on the birds of prey that call our urban canopies home.

The most recent rescue occurred after a concerned caller witnessed a Black Kite plummet to the ground as a tree was being felled to make way for a new structure. This marks the second such rescue where local animal rescuer has performed at this specific location, indicating a high-risk zone for nesting or roosting birds.

"It’s devastating to see these magnificent birds injured because of a lack of oversight," says Nickson Rodrigues. "The callers mentioned the bird fell while they were cutting the tree.

Black Kites are essential to Margao’s ecosystem. As scavengers, they keep our streets clean and maintain a healthy environmental balance. However, they often nest in the very trees targeted for urban expansion. When a tree is cut without inspection:

  • Adults are injured by falling branches or the impact of the fall.

  • Nests and chicks are often destroyed instantly.

  • Habitat loss forces surviving birds into smaller, more dangerous territories.
